Songs & Dances of Karpathos, Greece in Baltimore in the 1970s

about

One of a handful of exceptionally scarce Greek releases recorded in downtown Baltimore during the 1970s. The majority of Baltimore's Greek population came from the islands, including a community from the villages of Olympos and Diafani on the north of the Dodecanese island of Karpathos in particular who had begun to arrive by the late 1940s and founded an Olympian Brotherhood with close ties to Baltimore's St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in east Baltimore's Greektown. (There is one other LP known to have been made at the same studio in 1977 by another group of performers from Karpathos, although we have not encountered a copy.)

Because of a lack of documentation related to the performers, our guess at this time is that they were touring musicians who were brought by the Brotherhood rather than residents of Baltimore. We are not aware of any further recordings by these artists and would be grateful for further information.
