about

Sergey Karpetyan was born April 20, 1933 and came into prominence in Armenia in the late '50s. A revivalist of folk songs as well as an innovator, he played clarinet and saxophone but is closely associated with the revival of the duduk on which he played classical Armenian melodies, the tunes of ashugs (antique bards), modern composers, and folks tunes - the full gamut of Armenian national music during the Soviet era. He toured with the ensemble of Armenian Radio and Television to Egypt, Greece, Iceland, and Algeria along with regular tours through Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. He taught at the Sayat Nova Music School in Yerevan in the '80s and was known to have played in the highlands outdoors for peasants and to appear as a performer at weddings for free as acts of patriotism. He died September 25, 2015
