about

Dr. Gohar of Cairo was known to some Americans in the late 1940s and early 50s for his work as a marine biologist. It is not out of the question that he made these recordings for the Brooklyn-based label run by Albert Rashid during Dr. Gohar's visits to the U.S. during that period.

It has been reported online that he was a medical doctor (an eye-surgeon) and an officer of the Egyptian military. He was certainly a dedicated player of the buzuq, a little-recorded a steel-stringed folk instrument related to the Greek bouzouki and the Turkish baglama. We are aware only of one other release by him, issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture about 20 years after this disc was issued.
