about

Multi-instrumentalist Nathoo Khan (b. 1920; d. 1971) was born in Amritsar, Punjab and studied under his father Baba Balle and uncle Feroze Din, Utd. Ahmadi Khan of Delhi, and Maula Bukhsh of the Talwandi gharana of dhrupad, the oldest school of Hindustani classical music. He is thought of as having been largely self-taught on the sarangi, but in a remembrance by Amjad Parvez, Nathoo Khan's first major performance was so successful that all but one of the other performers backed out of playing after him.

He performed regularly as an accompanist on All India Radio before relocating to Karachi after partition. He worked on Radio Pakistan as both an accompanist (including the great singers Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Malika-e-Mausiqi Roshan Ara Begum, Ustads Nazakat and Salamat Ali Khan, and Ustad Umeed Ali Khan) as well as composing light music. He was poor his whole life. While on tour in Europe in 1971, his clothes were so threadbare and his is appearance so disheveled that he was thought by hotel staff in Geneva, Switzerland to be a servant rather than an artist. He fell ill while on tour and died destitute and largely unknown except for by a circle of cognoscenti who widely considered him as one of the greatest virtuosi of the sarangi, a notoriously difficult instrument that has been in decline in usage since the introduction of the harmonium. This LP, the only full-length recording issued under his own name, was released posthumously as a memorial the following year.
