about

I have admired the work of the ethnomusicologist and record producer Jacques Brunet since first encountering it 30 years ago.The hundreds of recordings he made in southeast Asia and released on European LPs from the 1960s to '80s are unbelievably beautiful. Many of them have languished out of print for decades.

Nearly 20 years ago, I put together a CDR mixtape of some of my favorite of his recordings from various LPs of central Javanese court gamelan. A decade later, I revised that collection for a cassette release made by friends in an edition of 100 copies. This collection is yet another draft of that same mixtape.

I have inquired over the years with some in-the-know friends in music circles about Brunet; those I have asked do not seem to know his whereabouts or whether he is alive. Given his amazing legacy, it seems hardly credible. I would be grateful to know more. I am such a fan.
