about

Composed by Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar (b. 1918; d. Jan. 5, 1982) with lyrics by Rajendra Krishan (b. June 6, 1919; d.1988) for the film Asha (1957, the same year as Jailhouse Rock), “Eena Meena Deeka” was among the earliest Indian rock-n-roll songs. The lyrics, largely nonsense based on children’s rhymes, are sung by the film’s young star Kishor Kumar (b. Aug. 4, 1929; d. Oct. 13, 1987) with background vocals by Asha Bhosle (b. Sept. 8, 1933), it remains an evergreen Bollywood favorite of the subcontinent.
