about

An early and successful champion of disc recording in Constantinople (Istanbul) Hâfız Âşir ran a gramophone and record shop and recorded prolifically for the Gramophone, Zonophone, Favorite, Odeon and Orfeon labels. His compositions were performed and recorded by many of his contemporaries including Tambouri Cemil Bey. A devout Muslim, he was muezzin in the Eminönü and Yenicami sections of the city.

All of these recordings were made for Odeon ca. 1906, except for track 1 (a duet with Refik Bey), which was made for Favorite in May 1905 and track 12, which was made for Odeon in 1907.
They are presented simply in order of their matrix numbers and, presumably, the order in which they were recorded.

Transfers and restoration by Ian Nagoski

Many thanks to Christine Gabaly for her contribution in memory of her grandparents Setrak and Siranoush Aijian.
Thanks also to Manolis Orfanidis and Jonathan Ward for information.

Note that song title transliterations are those as given on the labels on the original U.S. Odeon discs issued in the early 1920s.

The discs were issued at several different speeds ranging between about 71 and 88 rpm. The transfers were made at speeds as nearly as we could guess were correct.
